Coolcashin in great nick

Coolcashin is reported to be "in great nick" after his below-par effort last time when pulling up in the Guinness Greenmount Park Novice Chase at Limerick on St Stephen's Day.

Trainer Michael Bowe said today: "I'm able to do nothing here with horses at the moment because the hill is frozen solid and I'm just going to keep him on the easy list until this thaw comes. You can't properly train horses this weather. I'm just depending here on the natural surface which is no good in this type of weather.

"The Limerick run was a combination of things. He wasn't in love with the track. He won on heavy ground in Thurles but that is a big difference to heavy ground in Limerick – the surface is totally different. We had a hell of a job getting to Limerick that day because of treacherous driving conditions.

"When we eventually got down there I went out on the track and I knew that it wasn't going to suit. I'd put that run aside, I'd just totally ignore it. The horse is fine, he is in great order and he has put on a nice bit of body condition since. He is just on the walker, I'm taking him out and hand walking him and it won't do him a bit of harm.

"I got a dose myself on New Year's Day, some sort of a virus. I've been with the doctor and antibiotics seem to have no affect on it, whatever sort of a plague it is. I'm just trying to keep going with it; I can't really afford to stay in bed."
