Curragh to Honour Brown Panther The Curragh racecourse has announced that a Listed race will be run this season in honour of 2014 Irish St Leger winner Brown Panther. The race over 12 furlongs will take place on Sunday 9th October. Brown Panther sustained a fatal injury while attempting to defend his crown in last year's renewal of the Group 1 contest. Owned and bred by former International soccer star Michael Owen in conjunction with Betfair co-founder Andrew Black the horse was a favourite amongst racegoers both here and abroad. Michael Owen commented: "It was an honour to own and breed Brown Panther, he was a wonderful horse and to lose him was heart breaking. His greatest triumph was at The Curragh so I'd like to thank them for this tribute in his memory." It is hoped that Owen will be able to attend the race in October and present the winning connections with a trophy.
