The Curragh Racecourse will stage a race to honour European and World champion race mare Snow Fairy, following an agreement with her owner and breeder Mrs Cristina Patino to support a prestigious Group 3 contest for fillies and mares over 9 furlongs.

The Snow Fairy Stakes will take place on Sunday 28th August and will celebrate the racing career of one of the greatest mares to have raced in recent times.

Snow Fairy was the ultimate rags to riches racing stories, having failed to gain a bid at Goffs Sales as a yearling, she joined Newmarket based trainer Ed Dunlop. Although she showed decent form as a juvenile, it was as a three, four and five year old she really thrived winning six top level races in four different countries.

Her impressive roll of honour includes victories in the Darley Irish Oaks, Epsom Oaks, Hong Kong Cup and two Group one races in Japan, finishing her illustrious career with success in the Irish Champion Stakes and accumulating close to 5 million euro in total prize money.

Evan Arkwright Commercial Manager of the Curragh Racecourse commented:

“We are delighted to be able to name a race after one of our most popular classic winners with racing fans having great memories of her outstanding performance when landing the Darley Irish Oaks by a record eight lengths. Mrs Patino has been an incredibly generous supporter of the Curragh and we are very grateful to her for agreeing to enhance this relationship in order to pay tribute to the achievements of her legendary race mare.”

Mrs Patino’s Anamoine Ltd has enjoyed a long and successful association with the County Kildare venue with sponsorship of the Big Bad Bob Gladness Stakes since 20 together with support of races on the first race of the season and during the Tattersalls Irish Guineas Festival to promote Elusive Pimpernel who resides as a stallion at the Irish National Stakes.
