Derby to bypass Power Gold Cup

Eoin Griffin has virtually ruled out a quick return visit to England for the Paddy Power Gold Cup with The Last Derby following his victory at Ascot.

The five-year-old gave the County Kilkenny trainer his biggest success to date when springing a 33-1 surprise in the United House Gold Cup on Saturday.

That earned him a 16-1 quote with the sponsors for the prestigious handicap chase at Cheltenham on November 14.

However, Griffin believes another long journey back to England so soon is probably too much to ask.

"I think it's almost certain he won't be going over for it. After travelling over there and back it's a little bit too much to ask him to do it again in a fortnight's time," he said.

"It's two miles-four-and-a-half furlongs which is a bit on the short side for him, so I think we'll probably stick to three miles.

"We will decide in the next week where we might go. The ground is all important for him.
