Rookie trainer Donnacha O'Brien is excited about being part of Irish Champions Weekend in his first season.

The youngest son of Aidan O'Brien has already made a big splash early in his second career with Fancy Blue, a dual Group 1 winner this year in the Prix De Diane and Nassau Stakes.

She holds engagements in both the Coolmore America 'Justify' Matron Stakes and Irish Champions Stakes and could spearhead a strong team for the Longfield Stables-based handler.

“The weekend brings a lot of people together for the love of the sport. It's something we can be proud of and it's a very important for our country,” said O'Brien.

“It's an important time of year for those good horses. We've seen over the past number of years how strong the races have been.

“The likes of the Champion Stakes and other races are as good as any in the world and we are lucky to have it.

“I'm kind of past nerves at this stage but it's not just another weekend, it's obviously very important, and you are going to be a bit anxious, but all we can do is our best and after that it's up to the horses and riders on the day.”
