Saturday is a busy day on the racing front in Britain but Ireland’s only fixture is a seven-race National Hunt card from Downpatrick.

The action kicks off at 13:40 and runs through to the finale at 17:10. We have provided selections and analysis for three of the races on Saturday’s card, these include a potentially progressive Gordon Elliott horse that should have more to give in handicaps.

  • 1.40 Downpatrick - Kenisa Sport

Gordon Elliott has done well at Downpatrick so far this season, with three winners from his nine runners at the track. He runs Kenisa Sport in the opening event on Saturday - a mares maiden hurdle over 2m3f.

Kenisa Sport came close to winning the second of her two starts in Irish points and was only beaten by half-a-length when runner-up at Boulta in December. Switching hands for £85,000 after that, she struggled on her rules debut in a Gowran bumper a couple of months later.

It was a much better display when she was second at Down Royal a month later and she’s clearly going the right way. Kenisa Sport was a comfortable winner of a 2m2f bumper here last month and she was well in command at the finish that day.

Now trying hurdles for the first time, 2m3f looks like a good starting point and it’s unlikely that this is the deepest of maiden hurdles. There should be more to come and she looks like the one they all have to beat.

    1.402m. 2f. 185yds. 18 Declared.
    Irish Stallion Farms EBF (M) M'dn H'dle of €15,000.00 4-y-o plus

    2.15 Downpatrick - Chortal

Chortal also represents the Gordon Elliott yard and he was a little disappointing in three starts on the Flat for John & Thady Gosden.

The four-year-old began his hurdling career in maiden company over the winter and was well beaten by the likes of Beyond Your Dreams and Sainte Lucie.

Equally as disappointing on handicap debut at Fairyhouse in February, he did improve for the step up to 2m2f when third over course and distance next time. He then got off the mark with an impressive 13-length success at Bellewstown in April.

The return to handicaps should suit now and Paddy Cleary’s 7lb claim will certainly come in handy. Improvement will be needed off this sort of mark but now that he’s going the right way, he’s entitled to be bang in the mix here.

    2.152m. 1f. 165yds. 14 Declared.
    Randox H'cap H'dle of €11,500.00 4-y-o plus

    4.35 Downpatrick - Dinoland

John McConnell has been in pretty poor form recently but it only takes one winner to get back on track and Dinoland could be the one to do it.

The son of Doctor Dino has only had one start over fences so far and there could be any amount of improvement to come in this sphere.

He took his form to a new level last summer and performed consistently, winning twice and finishing second twice in five starts. McConnell’s gelding was a comfortable winner of his last start in handicaps at Down Royal in August and an 8lb rise looks reasonable with that in mind.

Obviously he’ll need to be forward enough on his first start for 267 days, but he is definitely one to keep on side for the time being and a return to winning ways can’t be ruled out.

    4.352m. 7f. 150yds. 9 Declared.
    AJC Group H'cap S'chase of €10,000.00 4-y-o plus
