Drama aplenty as Ifallgoeswell scores for the Byrnes

There was no shortage of drama in the opening Connolly's RED MILLS Irish EBF Auction Maiden Hurdle at Wexford where Ifallgoeswell came out on top for Charles and Philip Byrnes.

However, the story of the race really centred on Jack Kennedy who did remarkably well to keep the partnership intact aboard the front-running Dunleer Crystal after almost unseating on the home turn before two out.

Kennedy later reported to the stewards that his foot slipped out of his iron turning in and he looked sure to exit out the side door.

However, the jump jockeys’ championship leader held on grimly to the Gordon Elliott-trained gelding but did lose both irons as well as significant momentum and ground.

Ifallgoeswell (9/4 jt fav) kept on best in the closing stages to get the better of De Jour En Jour by a neck with Dunleer Crystal, incredibly, keeping on into third a further three and a half lengths adrift.

Charles Byrnes said, “It's great to get the win with him, he had been very consistent. He had his ground today.

"We ran him last weekend and the plan wasn't to come back as quick, but this didn't look a great race. We'll tip away with him now."
