Economics is edging closer to making his long-awaited reappearance on British Champions Day at Ascot next week.

Trainer William Haggas confirmed the chestnut colt “on track” for the Qipco Champion Stakes having suffered no ill effects from a racecourse gallop at Newmarket last weekend.

Winner of the Dante Stakes last season, Haggas resisted the urge to run him in the Derby and that patience was rewarded when he won the Irish Champion Stakes.

We’ve a few hurdles to jump, but if he is confirmed on Monday the plan will be to run.

From Leopardstown he went to Ascot for last year’s Champion Stakes, but has not run since finishing in sixth place behind Anmaat and Calandagan when he was found to have bled.

On Track for Ascot Return

Speaking at Newmarket on Friday, Haggas told the PA news agency: “He worked this morning and was fine. We’ve a few hurdles to jump, but if he is confirmed on Monday the plan will be to run.

“I would say he is on track (for Ascot), and he was fine this morning.”
