Punchestown’s 21-runner Matchbook Supporting Irish Racing Maiden Hurdle centred around just two horses, with winner Koktail Brut (10/11f) providing trainer Gordon Elliott with a double, having defeating Noel Meade’s runner-up Colcannon (11/10).

Koktail Brut made all when scoring by nine lengths from the always-chasing keen-going Colcannon, with Splendid Fellow finished 24 lengths further behind in third place.

Elliott, earlier successful with the Jordan Gainford-partnered Highland Crystal was represented by assistant Lisa O’Neill who reported “Koktail Brut was very good, he was a lovely horse last year and I think he’s matured since the summer break.

“Danny (Gilligan) said he had a bit of a blow from the back-of-the-last so should improve plenty.

“He’s always a horse that we’ve really liked, he’s straightforward and professional about what he does. Danny was impressed by how well he picked up in the home straight. He should be capable of stepping into graded company.”
