Gordon Elliott has been left devastated by the loss of his champion point-to-point mare Derg Princess.

The daughter of Definite Article won six point-to-points this year and she was jointly awarded the crown of champion point-to-point mare with Most Chaste at the end of season awards which were held in early June.

The Sean Grogan owned seven-year-old was sent off the short-priced 13/8 favourite for her handicap hurdle debut at Bellewstown on Sunday.

She was making headway in second before the third last when disaster struck and she was pulled up injured in the race which was eventually won by Ocean Bright.

It subsequently emerged that the chestnut mare had broken her hind leg and she had to be put down.

Elliott tweeted on Sunday evening: "Absolutely devastated to have lost our champion p2p mare, Derg Princess, at Bellewstown today after she broke a hind leg #superstarmare."
