Point-to-point runner-up Maverick Mack caused a minor upset at 10/1 to win Gowran’s PRL Group Maiden Hurdle (Div I) today, scoring for trainer Gordon Elliott, jockey Jack Kennedy and owner Ray Stokes.

Beaten just a short-head at Tullaherin last April and bought for €40,000 the following month, the son of Pillar Coral was held in a Punchestown last month but today scored in fine style, beating 5/2 favourite Bergamasquo by six and a half lengths.

Elliott, with his 11th win in a fortnight, reported “we knew he was a jumper and ran him in a bumper hoping we might get away with it, but it turned into a sprint.

“Jack said it was a good performance today and he hit the line well. It might not have been the strongest race, but he couldn’t have done any more than he did. He jumped great and Ray Stokes is a great supporter of the yard so I’m very happy.”
