Epsom continue to water

Epsom are planning two more circuits of watering ahead of the Investec Derby Festival.

The ground is currently described as good but no rain is forecast from midweek.

Andrew Cooper, Clerk of the Course and Director of Racing at Epsom Downs, said yesterday afternoon: "We are expecting up to two millimetres of rain early this evening, while there is an outside chance of a shower tomorrow.

"Otherwise, the week is forecast to be dry and warm. The Investec Derby Festival starts on Friday with Investec Ladies' Day and the forecast then is for temperatures in the low 20's Celsius, with similar weather on Saturday, Investec Derby Day."

Watering has been going on at the course since April and will continue this week.

Cooper added: "At the moment, we are planning to do two more circuits of watering, with the first starting on the Hill this evening. We will put on six millimetres all round, completing around the course tomorrow.

"The second lot of watering will commence on Wednesday on the Hill and be finished on Thursday. We have not decided yet how much water will be used then.

"The aim is to have ground no quicker than Good to Firm on Saturday for the Investec Derby."
