Esherann wore down hotpot Standard Deviation to land the spoils in the finale at Naas tonight.

Billy Lee made the running on the 1/4 favourite but he was strongly pressed going to the furlong pole by the Dermot Weld-trained colt in the mile maiden.

The Aga Khan-owned winner, who went off at 10/3, got on top inside the final furlong to record a half-length success under Chris Hayes.

Wootton Bassett colt Esherann had been placed on his first two starts.

Weld said:- “He battled very well and a very strong ride from Chris Hayes. He answered every call.

“It was one of those tactical races between two top class riders. Hopefully we’ll get some black-type with him during the year.”
