It looks like a day for buying winning distances on the heavy ground at Fairyhouse and One Big Boum (11/2) came home alone to win the BAR 1 Betting Tommy Carberry Handicap Hurdle by a whopping 24 lengths.

Up in grade having won at Navan on his previous start, Niall Moore’s mount made light of a 10lb higher mark.

He tracked the front-running Our Uncle Jack and went on after four out. Linden Arden was his only danger in the home straight but that rival could find no more between the final two flights as One Big Boum coasted home to gain a fourth career victory in the colours of the Grey Stays Syndicate.

“It was a good performance. It’s a great race to win, because Tommy Carberry was my hero when I was a young fella growing up,” said winning trainer Philip Fenton.

“He looked to be in control and he stretched out well to the line. He’s an improving horse and the blinkers certainly make a difference to him.

“He’s effective on that ground and it looks very necessary.

“He could go to Punchestown for the two-and-a-half mile opportunity race but it depends on ground.

“We’ll see how he is, there is no such thing as an easy race on very heavy ground. We’ll take our time with him as he likes to be fresh.”
