Flat races abandoned at Ballinrobe

Following the running of the first race the Stewards met with a deputation of riders who echoed concerns about the condition of the track after a number of incidents where horses had slipped. They added that the track had become slippy following heavy showers just before this race.

Evidence was heard from Mr. Brendan Sheridan, Clerk of the Course who informed the riders that sand had been applied to the bends following the running of the race. Consequently the five riders for the second race agreed to ride subject to a review after the second.

Following the second race the stewards met with all five riders who unanimously felt that the track was unsafe for flat racing. They also spoke to a number of National Hunt riders who had walked the track but felt that the track was safe for national hunt racing.

The stewards also met with a number of trainers and the race course manager Mr. John Flannelly.

Having considered all the evidence the stewards abandoned the third and fourth flat races in the interest of safety with national hunt racing to resume for the fifth race.
