Former long-serving trainer Gerry Lynch has passed away after a long illness.

He was based in Craughwell, Co Galway during his lengthy career and saddled his last winner in September 2019 with Miss Mcilroy in Listowel.

Alan Hannon paid tribute to his former boss: "I'm from Galway myself and I worked for him a number of times. I held an amateur licence and Gerry gave me my first ride going back to the late 80s. I mostly rode for him in the point-to-point circuit - he would have had a lot of point-to-pointers probably more so than track horses. at that point.

"I also worked in his yard for a couple of seasons and I came back to him in the latter stages of my career. I think at his peak Gerry might have had 25 horses in training.

"Letter of Credit was a good horse for him (won two bumpers and a maiden hurdle) and he had Experimental who won the Listed Mercer Hotel October Handicap Hurdle (by 10 lengths in 1999).

"He was very approachable and knowledgeable, but he was a pretty accomplished amateur rider himself.

"He was a good man to relay to you as a young person his experience. He really got me going in terms of understanding the game."

May he rest in peace.
