Galileo heads QEII entries

Galileo remained on course for an audacious tilt at the crown of Europe`s champion miler today.

He was among 45 entries unveiled for the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes at Ascot, scene of his victory in the King George VI And Queen Elizabeth Diamond Stakes last month.

The colt had earlier won the Vodafone Derby and Irish Derby over the same mile-and-a-half trip but connections are considering trying him over a mile on September 29th, three weeks after his bid for the 10-furlong Irish Champion Stakes at Leopardstown.

A top-class entry for the Queen Elizabeth also includes French filly Banks Hill and Godolphin`s Noverre, who were each hailed as 'the best miler in Europe' after winning the Coronation Stakes and Sussex Stakes respectively last time out.

Galileo`s trainer Aidan O`Brien has put 18 horses in the race, including star sprinter Mozart and St James`s Palace Stakes winner Black Minnaloushe.

Other notable names in the field are German raider Proudwings, fresh from her winin last month`s Falmouth Stakes at Newmarket, and Bocelli from Singapore.

The Queen Elizabeth is the feature event at Ascot`s September meeting - which has been extended to three days (September 28th-30th) this year - and has been made the fifth race of the Saturday so it acts as a climax to television coverage.

BETDAQ were revealed today as sponsors of the fixture. The soon-to-be-launched Irish-based bet brokerage service is backing a race on each of the three days, notably the BETDAQ Diadem Stakes on the Saturday.
