Gavin tops in Gowran pony race History was made over the last two weeks as Pony Races were staged on Irish racecourses for the first ever time. The Curragh St. Leger meeting on Saturday September 14th was the venue for the first race over the Guineas mile which saw fifteen year old Naas rider Sean Corby triumph on One Direction for the Orr family from Co. Donegal. Second place went to Georgie's Girl ridden by Calvin Gavin while the Jack Kennedy ridden Molly's Dream finished third. Gowran Park staged the second race last Sunday and Georgie's Girl went one better than the Curragh under a polished front-running ride from fifteen year old Athlone rider Calvin Gavin. The winner is owned by Ballinasloe Co. Galway based Gerry Murphy and trained by Tony Beegan. A neck behind was the Evan Daly ridden The Sprout while Dingle Derby hero Tom 'Socks' Madden came home in third place on You're the One.
