Gosden Satisfied with Lucarno

John Gosden has been happy with Lucarno's build-up to Saturday's King George and Queen Elizabeth Stakes at Ascot after his victory last time at Newmarket in the Princess Of Wales's Stakes.

"He has been fine since the July meeting and although everyone talks about the ride given to Papal Bull, you have to remember that Lucarno had to give away a Group 1 penalty," revealed his trainer.

"We knew that he wanted a mile and a half so Jimmy (Fortune) strode on and did his own thing and it was a superb ride."

Gosden stressed that the four year old does not have to make the running in what should be a fascinating tactical clash at Ascot.

"He won from the off the pace in both the Great Voltigeur and the St Leger but going from the front is an option," he added.

"There are pacemakers in the race and we shall just have to see how things are going at Swinley Bottom."

Like most observers, Gosden was hugely impressed with Duke Of Marmalade in the Prince Of Wales's Stakes at Royal Ascot and feels the market leader will have no trouble with stepping up to 12 furlongs.

"He was extremely impressive that day as he travelled so well," Gosden said.

"I thought at the time he would have no problems with a mile and a half and the trip won't beat him on Saturday."
