Ground softens at Epsom Further rain has eased the ground at Epsom to soft, good to soft in places for the opening day of the Derby meeting today featuring the Vodafone Oaks.Following a basically dry day yesterday the going had started to dry out and was officially good to soft, soft in places. However, that changed overnight when 3½mm of rain fell on the track.Clerk of the course Andrew Cooper said: 'We`re back to how it walked first thing yesterday morning. We had 3½mm of rain after conditions had started to improve. We had a sharp shower between two and three o`clock this morning.'Epsom is a racecourse that, as long as it is dry, will continue to improve, but the proviso is obviously what rain we have.'Hopefully we won`t see any more today but there`s a chance there could be some showers around in the early part of tomorrow which to be fair has been the overall forecast for some time.'
