Guest Appeals Over Sobers Decision

Richard Guest has launched an appeal into the £3,000 fine he received over the running of novice hurdler Sobers at Ayr last week.

The trainer initially indicated he would not contest the decision of the stewards that jockey Paul O'Neill, suspended for 21 days, had failed to take all reasonable and permissible measures to secure the best-possible placing aboard the gelding, who finished fourth.

However, the appeal into the punishments, which included a 40-day suspension for the horse, is unlikely to be held for some time, according to Jockey Club public relations manager Paul Struthers.

'An appeal has been received from Richard Guest, but the matter is now on hold pending a security department investigation into potentially suspicious betting patterns relating to the horse,' Struthers said.

At the time of the decision, Guest had told reporters: 'I am absolutely shocked, I can't believe it.

'I know it did not look very good, but Paul came back in and said straight away the horse had gurgled and he told the clerk of the scales ? I have no reason to disbelieve him.

'I have had some harsh decisions in the past, but that is the harshest.'
