Leading Smurfit Champion Hurdle candidate Arcalis could have a prep race for the Cheltenham Festival at Haydock on January 21.

Trainer Howard Johnson is eyeing the Commhoist Logistics Champion Hurdle Trial for the six-year-old grey following his impressive display in the Pertemps 'Fighting Fifth' Hurdle at Newcastle in November.

'He might have one run - ground permitting - in the Haydock Champion Hurdle Trial. If not, he will go straight to Cheltenham,' Johnson told Racing UK.

The County Durham raider is a general 9-2 chance to score again at Cheltenham after landing last year´s Letheby & Christopher Supreme Novices´ Hurdle.
