Henderson pays tribute to Long Run Nicky Henderson paid tribute to the "nicest and kindest" horse on the day the curtain came down on the career of former Gold Cup and dual King George VI Chase hero Long Run. The 11-year-old, latterly trained by owner Robert Waley-Cohen, returned to the track following an absence of 672 days but could only finish fifth in a hunter chase at Carlisle. He won four British Grade Ones under the care of Henderson, who said: "We had some fantastic years together and he really is the most lovely horse you could ever wish to meet. "Some of these very good horses have cranky characters, but he was the nicest and kindest horse you could ever come across. "He won four Grade Ones for us - a Feltham, two King Georges and a Gold Cup. Those are the kind of horses you'd die for. "We knew he was a good horse when he came from France and for him to go and win a Gold Cup was fantastic. "Robert has been a great friend since the very early days and Sam (Waley-Cohen) obviously rode the horse and was brilliant on him. "It was a real family affair and I was very lucky to be part of that family for the duration of the Long Run story."
