Henry de Bromhead is a name synonymous with Champion Chase winners but casting an eye over the past two days’ results, it’s his Flat string that has been making an emphatic early statement in the turf season.

De Bromhead has saddled three winners on the Flat since Sunday at Naas and Roscommon, including in the Listed Owenstown Stud Stakes with Wannabe Royal.

Another trainer enjoying a fine run of form is Ken Condon, whose Starspangledbanner filly Oh Cecelia, finished second in the Group 3 Lacken Stakes at 50-1.

Former jockey and renowned jockey coach Paddy Flood and journalist Johnny Ward discussed the recent successes on the latest episode of The Irish Angle with Emma Nagle.

Quicker turnaround with Flat horses

Paddy Flood, who currently rides out at the De Bromhead yard, said: “He does very, very well with his flat string. They're really, really flying.

“Wannabe Royal, she finished in front of Albert Einstein first time up this year in the Curragh.

“She’s a little filly that came out of Joseph O’Brien’s yard she’s very hard on herself, a very, very tough ride for a small filly.

“She's got some good riders riding her out in the mornings, with the main ambition to try and get her to switch off.

“I rode her plenty of times, but I thought seven furlongs would be a stretch for the way she races. But she was headed and she battled back.

“The little filly in the maiden, Totally Puzzled, she's not much to look at, she's a small filly, but she was tough as well.

“I suppose a lot of jump trainers are probably looking at the flat. I wouldn't say it's easier to train a flat horse, but it's quicker.

“Everything's a bit quicker, and especially in the summer, you have a jump horse coming back and it might be a little bit jarrey.

“Jump horses will need a week off after a run in the summer nearly, whereas the flat ones they seem to pull up fresher and it's easier to get them back to the races.

“So you can see why he's getting more and more flat horses, because he's definitely able to train them.

“The value for money and the quicker turnover - Noel Meade has bought into it too.”

“After having a great winter with his horses. Henry's got a really nice bunch of flat horses. If you like the filly that won the maiden, there are plenty of others there that will win maidens too.”

Condon in rich vein of form

Johnny Ward brought to attention the for Ken Condon’s horses are in:

“Ken was probably looking like he was fairly quiet going into the start of the season. But his horses are really, really thriving.

“Oh Cecilia finishing second to Havana Anna at a big price, and Moss Tucker to come back looking like he might be edging back to some bit of form.

“And nice to see Stephen Thorne have a nice winner as well.”
