Gordon Lord Byron's excellent effort in the Betfred Sprint Cup has opened up many options for the Tom Hogan-trained four-year-old.

The highly-progressive gelding was only beaten three-quarters of a length by Society Rock in the six-furlong Group One at Haydock on Saturday, after taking a Listed contest over seven furlongs at York on his previous start.

Gordon Lord Byron was promoted to favouritism for the William Hill Gold Cup at Ayr on September 22, for which he would have to carry top weight of 9st 12lb.

That is just one of the races Hogan is considering for his charge.

"He's grand. He arrived back home last night at about 3.15am and he ate up most of his feed and has been out for a pick of grass this morning. He's as happy as could be," said the County Tipperary handler.

"He pulled off a shoe in the race and he lost another one going back to the stable yard. He must have got clipped at some stage in the race.

"He was never in front in the race and was closing on Society Rock as they got to the line.

"We'll see over the next few days. There are plenty of options for this horse now. There's the Challenge Stakes at Newmarket and there are different races we can look at.

"He has entries in Ireland in the Concorde Stakes in Tipperary and we might look at a bit of foreign travel after that.

"He's a proper horse and he's a four-year-old still improving."
