Horse In Profile: Continuous Aidan O’Brien has been in excellent recent form, with his strike-rate in the last fortnight a healthy 39 per cent. He’s been unstoppable in the recent Derby and Oaks trials, winning all seven which took place across Britain and Ireland last week. We're set to see his 2023 St Leger winner Continuous in the Yorkshire Cup at York on Friday and with that in mind, we’re going to take a closer look at his career. More will be needed in order to score at York on recent evidence, but there are reasons to be optimistic. Yorkshire Cup Odds BoyleSports Betting Offer Excited for the PGA Championships? Two from two at two Out of a well-bred Galileo mare, this Japanese-bred son of Heart’s Cry ran twice as a two-year-old and won on both occasions. He began his career in a 7f maiden at the Curragh in August 2022 and travelled powerfully throughout the race. The response was immediate once Ryan Moore said go and he ran out a cosy winner, with lots of subsequent winners coming out of the race. There was lots to like about that professional display but with some room for improvement as well. An away day in France then followed and he toughed it out to win by three quarters of a length at Saint-Cloud. It was a messy race but Moore managed to keep Continuous out of trouble and the improvement from his first run was good to see. Thriving at three He got better and better as the next season went on, winning the Great Voltigeur in good style at York in August 2023. It was the perfect St Leger trial as he was strong at the finish and showed plenty of class to boot. A comfortable success in the last Classic of the season at Doncaster then followed, despite Continuous being a little keen in the early stages. Also proving himself on soft ground, versatility is always a sign of a good horse. Connections made the brave decision to run him in the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe, where he stayed on to finish a respectable fifth, despite not having the pace to mount a serious challenge. Flopping at four Continuous won on his second start as a four-year-old with a battling victory in a pretty ordinary Group 3 over 1m2f at the Curragh. Before that, he finished a disappointing fifth on his comeback in the Hardwicke Stakes at Royal Ascot. An odds-on defeat in the Prix Foy at Longchamp then followed, before bitterly disappointing displays in the Arc and the Champion Stakes at Ascot. The Hong Kong Vase was next on the agenda and he could only manage ninth. Yorkshire Cup on the agenda Beaten in both starts this year, Continuous ran in Saudi Arabia and Dubai, and was particularly disappointing at Meydan last month. Clearly he’s going to need to rediscover his best form in order to win the Yorkshire Cup, but never underestimate Aidan O’Brien. Sweet William and Rebel’s Romance bring the best recent form to the table, but you could argue that historically, Continuous is the best horse in the race over this trip.
