Horse In Profile: Lossiemouth

The Willie Mullins assault on the British Trainers' Championship is in full flow once more and Lossiemouth could be aimed at either the Grade 2 Select Hurdle at Sandown on Saturday or will wait for the Punchestown festival next week.

The mare was a Cheltenham Festival scorer last month when romping home in the Mares' Hurdle, before following up in the Aintree Hurdle, and is primed for whatever her next target will be.

Lossiemouth right back to her very best

Lossiemouth is the top mare at Mullins' yard at his disposal and she's now a perfect three from three at the Cheltenham Festival in her career.

The Mares' Hurdle was the chosen target in 2025 to the disappointment of many, although hindsight is a wonderful thing and it would be easy to dwell on the fact she may well have won the Champion Hurdle the way the race unfolded.

Mullins and connections decided the Mares' was the best option for her and, sent off the 4/6 favourite, she cut through the field like butter and her class really shone through to win the race doing handstands.

She travelled superbly well, coasted into contention heading for the turn for home and duly held off stablemate Jade De Grugy by seven and a half lengths.

Lossiemouth was made to work a little bit harder by the progressive Wodhooh at Aintree but she still got the job done in style. Her early-season disappointments have now been left behind her and she will take beating in whatever race she lines up in next.

What race will she go for next?

All racing fans will want to see her line up in the Champion Hurdle at Punchestown next week, that's for sure. She also has an entry for the Mares' Hurdle at Punchestown and all being told, it is expected that she will stay in Ireland, but who knows?

There's £45,560 up for grabs for the winner of the Grade 2 Select Hurdle at Sandown on Saturday and a win there could be the difference between Mullins winning and not winning the British Trainers' Championship.

Mullins is throwing the kitchen sink at Sandown on Saturday and has a host of entries for the bet365 Gold Cup. A win there might well be enough to snatch the honours.

Lossiemouth's career to date

The star mare has amassed £728,859 in career earnings to date so she certainly owes connections nothing. She has won 11 of her 14 races and the seven-time Grade 1 winner surfaced as a star when justifying favouritism in the 2023 Triumph Hurdle.

Lossiemouth also has a 100 per cent record at Punchestown, landing the Champion Four Year Old Hurdle in 2023 and the Champion Hurdle in 2024, but this year's renewal of that contest looks much deeper as State Man, Constitution Hill, Brighterdaysahead and current Cheltenham Champion hurdler Golden Ace among the entries.

All in all, it will be fascinating to see where Lossiemouth turns up next, but she will have a big chance no matter where she goes.
