Hughes National hopes set for hurdle run

Stablemates Black Apalachi and Vic Venturi are to begin the build-up to the John Smith's Grand National with a run over hurdles at Leopardstown on Saturday.

The Dessie Hughes-trained pair are under orders for the Pertemps Handicap Hurdle (Qualifier) over three miles.

Hughes expects Black Apalachi to need the race as he has not seen action since the National last April when he unseated his rider at Bechers Brook on the second circuit when in the lead.

Black Apalachi had won the Becher Chase over the unique obstacles the previous November and Vic Venturi emulated that feat last autumn.

Vic Venturi has also had the benefit of another outing when fifth in the woodiesdiy.com Christmas Hurdle over three miles at Leopardstown.

"Both of them should run well. Vic Venturi is fit, while Black Apalachi will need the run," said the County Kildare handler.

"It's a case of getting them fit again before Aintree.

"After Saturday both of them will then run in the Bobbyjo Chase on February 20."

Black Apalachi took the Fairyhouse event over three miles and one furlong last winter.

He is generally available at 20-1 while Vic Venturi is a top-priced 25-1 for honours at Aintree on April 10th.
