Hughes reflects on super seven Richard Hughes has admitted that it would have taken something special to have beaten him in the final race at Windsor on Monday. Sent off the 15-8 favourite, Hughes' mount came under pressure early in the straight but the jockey was not to be denied and punched his mount out to win by two-and-a-quarter lengths. Having missed nearly the first month of the new season due to a ban he incurred riding in India, Hughes has been in irresistible form and is almost assured of a first title. He told Radio 4: "To be honest, I thought I would have a good day but you never think you will possibly ride seven winners in a day. Two or three or even four would be a great day, but seven was unbelievable. "I'm proud he (Harvey, Hughes' son) can say I rode seven winners in a day. "I was actually quite serene (in the last race). If it's not for me, I'm not going to do it, you know? If I do it, I do it so I was actually quite relaxed about the whole thing. "It would have taken a good horse to get by me on the last one inside the furlong pole. "I'm in a great position (in the title race), I'm nearly there. It's been a long, tough year but well worth it."
