Jockey Angle: 'If you have a very keen horse, you'd love to have Danny Mullins on his back' To celebrate the launch of race replays on irishracing.com, sponsored by William Hill, we have a brand new show with former professional rider, jockey coach and lead analyst Paddy Flood. Flood uses his in-depth knowledge of race riding to provide his typically intriguing and detailed insights on three rides from the past week. He highlights; a ride of the week, an unlucky in running and a riding incident. The unconventional style of Danny Mullins Focusing on a handicap hurdle from Limerick on July 2nd, Flood analyses Danny Mullins’ astute tactics to outride his rival jockeys and win on Eastmore for Charles Byrnes. Flood says: “Danny Mullins is known for riding unconventionally; he doesn't ride dangerously or anything like that. It's just that he has different ways of riding different horses. “If you have a very keen horse, you'd love to have Danny Mullins on his back. “But, it doesn't take a genius to pick where Danny Mullins is; he is on the wide outside. Watch The Jockey Angle in full “Now, Danny has obviously gone and walked that track, and he's got a plan in his head because Charles Byrnes came out and said it after the race that Danny actually rang him and said, "Listen, I feel like I need to go out to that outside ground. It's a lovely bit of ground. It's faster than the wetter ground, and this horse runs on fast ground." “There's 10 metres there, maybe 15 metres if you're pushing. Listen, Danny does this all the time. What are the other jockeys doing? “My query here is: Danny Mullins is on the favourite, Charles Byrnes's horse is being backed. What are the other jockeys doing? Why aren't they going out there with him? You've got acres of room. Danny's walked the track. Danny's no idiot; Danny is a top-class rider. “Now, later in the day, the IHRB actually changed the track. I'm just going to show you a clip of how far out Danny was up the straight. “You can see where Danny is; there's absolutely no mark whatsoever. And he's felt that's the best bit of the ground. And his horse has won, absolutely bolted in. And like I said before, Danny had said he thought it was 20 lengths better where he was. “My question is, why did the rest of the lads not go out there? Because in the following race, a good race, Paul Townend was riding in it on Daddy Long Legs, and Paul followed Danny. “They all went out there; especially Danny went wider again. Paul followed Danny everywhere and they were first and second. So, my question is: why did the lads not follow him? And then I feel like by not following him, they actually gave him a massive advantage.” Video replays are now available to view on irishracing.com from all Irish racecourses, along with a selection of premier British tracks.
