Trainer Paddy Magee landed a magnificent 4000/1 four-timer on Saturday. His Navan winners included: Shesthedevil (22-1), Admiral Will Brown (10-1) and Arch Enemy (7-2) before Glen Breeze completed the four-timer in Limerick at 5-2.

Magee had never saddled multiple winners on one day, so to have four winners was an historic result for a small yard.

Johnny Ward Hails Magee's Achievement

Johnny Ward was speaking to Emma Nagle and Paddy Flood on this week’s Irish Angle and was effusive in his praise for Magee: “This sort of achievement also needs to be put into the context of what Donnacha O'Brien or Fozzy Stack achieved this weekend.

“It's like comparing the resources of Spurs against a team struggling to get out of League Two.

“He's at the lower end of the scale in terms of the resources he has to buy horses. He really has to shop around to find horses at a lower level.

“If you look at the individual nature of these horses, Admiral Will Brown was probably one of the better-backed horses.

“He came from Dan McLoughlin's yard, and Dan McLoughlin has a very good reputation.

“Sometimes you see a horse switch yards and think it could improve, and that's exactly what happened. He got the horse from Dan McLoughlin, it was backed, and it won.”

Shrewd purchases

Ward commented on Glenn Breeze, his 5/2 winner in Limerick. “I looked this horse up, and Glenn Breeze is the only horse in the world I could find by the sire Royal Lytham.

“Royal Lytham was by Gleneagles and is the only stallion by Gleneagles I can think of currently represented on the racecourse. As much as this horse is only rated 46, he's won with him again.

“Royal Lytham only has a handful of runners. I don't know how this horse came into being, but Paddy has managed to win with him. They're all these unfashionable types. He buys horses cheaply and tries to win with them.

Ward continued: “This was an unbelievable performance. To win races in Ireland at any level, given the standard of racing here, you have to get everything right on the day.

“For Paddy Magee to land a four-timer with the standard of horses he has is off the charts.

“He should be well in the running for one of the HRI Awards later in the year. This is almost impossible to do. Fair play to him, and I hope he gets more horses out of it.”

Modest background

Emma Nagle highlighted the trainer’s background: “He's totally self-made by the sound of it.

“He came from a farming background, was a point-to-point rider, spent time with good trainers like Oliver Brady and Mick Mulvany and Noel Meade then went into breaking and pre-training before making a real go of training himself.

“He's probably working with more limited resources than a lot of other trainers. Even looking at his winners on Saturday, he was successful with sprinters, 10-furlong horses, two-year-olds, three-year-olds and older horses.

“He seems able to train them all, which is always a good sign of a trainer. He's definitely one to put in your notebook and follow over the coming weeks because he's clearly in great form.”
