Eddie Lynam 's faith in Jon Riggens (7/2) was vindicated with a short head success in the Navan Handicap over an extended five-furlongs.

The eight-year-old gelding raced in rear of mid-division and made good headway into second a quarter of a mile out. He disputed the lead with Alfred Tennyson a furlong down and soon edged ahead.

He maintained a narrow lead at the winning post over the 16/1 runner-up. Clonmacash was a length and a quarter back in third at 22/1.

Lynam said: "I wouldn't be an optimistic sort of a fella and I fancied Jon Riggens on Wednesday.

"He's on 71, and Sarah (Lynam, daughter) rode him out on Friday morning and said he was in great form. We declared him and then Ocean's Breath won (Fairyhouse, Friday) and I said that won't be in, so we'll run him. All the people I told to back him on Wednesday, you couldn't back him today at 7/2!"
