Joshua scores in Canada

Joshua Tree edged out fellow European raiders Mores Wells and Redwood to win the Canadian International.

Aidan O'Brien's charge, who won last year's Royal Lodge Stakes, only returned to action in the Great Voltigeur at York before seemingly not staying the trip in the Ladbrokes St Leger.

At Woodbine, he made the crucial move early in the straight and showed tremendous courage to fend off his two nearest pursuers by a head and a nose under a strong Colm O'Donoghue ride.

A delighted winning jockey told the Daily Racing Form: "He broke really well, got a good position early and settled down well into the race on the backstretch.

"The pace started to pick up from about a half-mile out, and he got into the best position in the race. The horse on my outside fell away, and he quickened up really well, and ran strong to the line. Obviously, he was prepared for today. He was trained perfectly for the race."

The victory means Joshua Tree is now guaranteed a place in the Breeders' Cup Turf field at Churchill Downs.
