'King Charles' welcomes second Listowel winner One of the area's most popular, and indeed controversial trainers, Charles Byrnes won for the second time this week today, as his well-supported Marian Avenue (10/1 — 7s), landed Listowel's Trant Goodwill Stakes Handicap Hurdle under son Philip Byrnes. Byrnes, a regular leading trainer at his local festival, drew a blank last September, but on Wednesday scored with Glin Road Boy and today doubled his score with Marian Avenue, who won easily from Loi Des Jeux , to give son Philip a 100th career success. Today’s opening race had been won by the King and Queen of England’s runner Reaching High on the high-profile festival meet, and following his own success, trainer Charles Byrnes stated “we failed to have a winner here last year when we tried hard. This year we weren't as uptight about it, we said we'd just take it as it comes. We'd love to have a winner or two of course and it has worked out (this week). “The fresh ground today is a big help to Marian Avenue. We said we'd jump out good and positive, try and get him jumping. He didn't travel the last day but Philip said he'd be good and positive and it work out great.”
