Lavery eyeing Park Stakes for New Energy New Energy could be set for the Cazoo Park Stakes at Doncaster if conditions on Town Moor are suitable. A winner over seven furlongs at the Curragh on debut in September 2021, the Sheila Lavery-trained son of New Bay has been tried in Pattern races ever since and has regularly punched above his weight this season against some of the best of the Classic crop. Second to Native Trail in the Irish 2,000 Guineas earlier in the summer, he was also running a huge race in the St James’s Palace Stakes at Royal Ascot before potentially failing to see out the stiff mile in the Group One affair. It was New Energy’s Ascot performance that tempted Lavery to drop back in trip for the Prix Jean Prat at Deauville and although the colt’s continental mission didn’t go to plan, his handler would prefer to give seven furlongs another try rather than run in Leopardstown’s Clipper Logistics Boomerang Mile, for which he also holds an entry. “I think Doncaster will be more likely, but I would really like a bit of ease in the ground so that will be a major factor,” said Lavery. “I don’t know what happened in France (at Deauville), he pulled a shoe in the stalls, he still didn’t run bad but it wasn’t the run I was expecting. He’s never run bad, but there’s times we’ve been slightly disappointed. “So the feeling at the moment is Doncaster and everything at the moment is on track. Everything has gone good with him since France, no issues, no setbacks or anything.”
