Lily no match for Terms in Lowther The David Wachman-trained Fire Lily had to settle for second as Best Terms claimed the Jaguar Cars Lowther Stakes at York. The pair fought out the finish in the Group Two contest and it was Richard Hannon's charge who asserted in the closing stages to claim victory. The winner was taking her unbeaten run to four and was supplementing her Queen Mary success at Royal Ascot. Best Terms, sent off an easy to back 11/1 shot, was the quickest away under Richard Hughes and was allowed to set her own pace in front. She was challenged by runner-up Fire Lily (4-1) in the final furlong but soon brushed her aside and was going away again at the line to score by two lengths. "She was very good," said Hughes. "She's small, but she's not as small as she was - she's grown a bit. "We've always said she needed six (furlongs), and she got away with it in the Queen Mary." Best Terms was quoted at 12-1 by William Hill for next year's 1000 Guineas. Hughes added: "She's so professional and was so easy to ride. "There's a lot of stamina there and I always knew she'd be better at six. "This year she'll go for the Cheveley Park (Newmarket, September 24), and then we'll start her off at Newbury in the spring." Richard Hannon jnr, the winning trainer's son and assistant, said: "She did that very well. She got three lengths out of the gate and never looked like getting beat. "We had to miss the Prix Robert Papin because she had a slight overreach. She's obviously confirmed superiority from Ascot. "She'll probably have one more run this year in the Cheveley Park and we'll deal with next season when it comes, but she should take a lot of beating in that race." David Wachman, Fire Lily's trainer, said: "The winner has won well, but it was a good run from her. "We'll probably meet the winner again in the Cheveley Park and I'll think about whether she'll run again before that."
