Loose horse in Sedgefield incident

A member of the Sedgefield racecourse staff had to be taken to hospital after a loose horse careered off the track during Tuesday's meeting.

Ivan Porter was standing in the area between the pre-parade and parade ring towards the end of the race for the Camerons Strongarm Cask Handicap Chase when the loose Braddock Island charged off the course.

Trainee clerk of the course Phil Tuck said it was unclear whether the horse or the rail had hit Mr Porter, who briefly lost consciousness and received emergency medical attention at the course.

The middle-aged employee was taken by ambulance to North Tees Hospital in Stockton.

"It's difficult to get any information if you're not a member of the family, but I believe he was doing OK," said Tuck.

"He was conscious when he left the track and I spoke with our senior medical officer. He was very confident there was no lasting damage.

"Mr Porter's job on racedays is to tell stable staff if their horse is chosen for dope testing by the stewards.

"He was stood where he normally stands behind the double rail. The horse turned right and went straight into the double rails. It was more the rail catching him, I believe, than the horse catching him.

"Thankfully these things happen very rarely."
