The Gavin Cromwell trained Macinamillion benefitted from a typically patient ride from Keith Donoghue when winning the concluding Drop, Lock & Leave Handicap Chase at Downpatrick.

Sporting first-time cheekpieces, the topweight was anchored in mid division, before gradually creeping into contention as the race developed.

Moving third after three out, the gelding went second on the approach to the penultimate fence.

Travelling strongly into the straight, Donoghue was at pains not to challenge leader Lakefield Flyer until halfway up the run-in.

Ridden to draw alongside over 100 yards out, Macinamillion went on close home to win by one-and-a-half lengths.

Keith Donoghue said: "We went a good gallop. There was probably a bit of a pace collapse then going to four out.

"My lad was in first-time cheekpieces and travelled a lot better. He probably hadn't been facing into it his last few runs.

"I was able to fill him up for four out then and had one go up the hill, and luckily it worked out.

"Hopefully, he can keep progressing and see what the handicapper does. He has disappointed us up to now, so hopefully the win will do his confidence good."
