Magic Wandle Enters Derby Fray

Wandle earned himself a 50-1 quote with Stan James for the Vodafone Derby after putting three rivals to the sword with consummate ease at Lingfield.

The Terry Mills-trained colt was sent off the well-backed 1-3 favourite in the Lloyd & Pamela Russell Golden Wedding Anniversary Maiden Stakes and cruised home by five lengths under Dane O'Neill.

Ed Dunlop's Maslak set a sedate early pace before quickening the tempo as the field entered the final four furlongs of the race.

Despite running green for O'Neill, Wandle never looked in any serious danger and powered past the eventual runner-up once asked to win his race approaching the final furlong.

Neil Morrice, media and on-course representative for Stan James, said: 'Wandle was solidly backed with us all morning and the confidence continued in the betting ring.

'His Newmarket maiden from last year had worked out incredibly well and this first success gives connections a platform from which to build towards Epsom.'
