Ross O’Sullivan doubled up at Punchestown tonight when Spanish Maid landed the odds in the second division of the 0-100 handicap hurdle.

The Workforce mare was a 4/5 shot to follow up on her chase success at Tramore last month and travelled strongly to launch her challenge going to the last flight.

She had to dig deep though on the run-in as Marian Avenue came to press her and had a neck to spare at the line, under Michael Kenneally.

“That was lovely. When I seen the price she was I said ‘this is crazy’,” said O’Sullivan.

“She just had a nice workable mark, she is definitely a better filly over fences than she is over hurdles.

“When I saw this race was dividing and that it was going to dilute it a good bit I thought it could maybe really open it up.

“There was a few quid for Charles’ (Byrnes — Marian Avenue) horse as well and he fought it out well at the finish.

“She’s hopefully a nice filly to look forward to. We can pick our tracks and run her with a little bit of ease in the ground, maybe back over fences again.

“Here you are guaranteed really safe ground and we’ll see what’s here again in June.”
