The Flat season is in full swing and with another Classic on the agenda this weekend courtesy of the Irish 2,000 Guineas at the Curragh on Saturday, it could be a make or break race for John & Thady Gosden's Field Of Gold.

The son of Kingman was an agonising second in the 2,000 Guineas at Newmarket last time out and is primed for his next target, as Juddmonte readies a big team for the Curragh's premier Flat meeting.

Purchased for a whopping €530,000 at Goffs November Sale in 2022, Field Of Gold is a well bred son of Kingman and he made a satisfactory debut when third behind subsequent Group 1 winner New Century over 7f at Doncaster last June.

He stepped up considerably on his debut effort when running out an easy winner over the same trip at Newmarket next time, with subsequent Group 3 winner Starzintheireyes in second, while the third, fourth, fifth, sixth, seventh and ninth have all won since.

It was now time for Field Of Gold to step into pattern company and he justified favouritism when winning the Group 3 Solario Stakes at Sandown, with a blistering turn of foot in the closing stages the decisive factor.

Longchamp was the next port of call as he took his chance in a Group 1 but he couldn't quicken in his usual style on softer ground and had to settle for fourth behind Baylldoyle in mate Camille Pissarro.

The Craven is usually a good trial for the 2,000 Guineas and it turned out to be the case this year. Field Of Gold was sent off the 10/3 favourite on the day at Newbury and he looked far more mature physically on his return to action.

Again, he found a great turn of foot to go clear in the last 100 yards and it was exactly the performance needed to be considered as a big Guineas contender.

Field Of Gold was now all the rage for the 2,000 Guineas and he was sent off as the 15/8 favourite on the day.

Again patiently ridden by Kieran Shoemark, he seemed to be travelling all over the eventual winner Ruling Court, but he was unable to pick up when asked and had to settle for second, becoming the fourth Craven winner in the last five years to be placed in the Guineas.

The fallout and the Irish 2,000 Guineas

John & Thady Golden were openly unhappy with the ride Shoemark gave Field Of Gold in the Guineas and he unfortunately lost his retaining rider role with the yard, who were now going to use the ‘best available rider’ moving forward.

Whether that was the right thing to do or not will be answered on Saturday as six-time Irish champion jockey Colin Keane is booked to ride their stable star in the Irish 2,000 Guineas. Field Of Gold is set to go off a short favourite for the contest and will have no excuses.
