Tim Doyle is his hoping stable star Mallowney can recapture his ability as the Thurles trainer aims the veteran gelding at a repeat bid for the Dan Moore Chase at Fairyhouse in the new year.

Mallowney won the 2015 renewal of the Grade A contest before following up in a Grade Two chase at Naas and while his rating then climbed to 162, the now rising 12-year-old had an injury-enforced layoff before making his return over hurdles at Thurles on December 17.

He finished fifth in a handicap hurdle, and Doyle said: "He came out of his Thurles run well and I've given him an entry in the Dan Moore Chase at Fairyhouse. I'm happy with his work at home and at Thurles he showed he still has the old sparkle but just got tired.

"That was his first run for a long time and we won't know for sure until he runs again if he can still win another one of those big races.

"He won the Dan Moore in 2015 and while we don't know what handicap mark he gets for another few days, I'd be hoping he gets a fair mark."
