A man has been taken to hospital with a suspected head injury after falling from a spiral staircase inside the stand at Dundalk stadium tonight.

The man in his thirties was reportedly walking along the staircase banister before slipping and falling over 20 feet on to the tile floor below.

An ambulance was swiftly on the scene to attend the man and racecourse Doctor Michael Kiernan is hopeful that he has escaped serious injury but admits the full extent of any injury won't be know until tomorrow.

“He was pretty much unconscious all the time. It's probably a head injury but he was so inebriated it was hard to tell,” said Doctor Kiernan.

“He went over (to the hospital) stable enough and we'll know tomorrow how he is. I'd say the outlook is fair to good.

“He appeared to be walking along the banister, balancing on it, before slipping. He caught it with his hand before letting go.

“He's a young fella from Cavan that was here on a stag.”

Manager Jim Martin had earlier said:-

“It was a guy in his thirties from Cavan. He was messing on the bannister and fell off it.

“He's semi-conscious but the Doc said he will be alright.

“He appeared to be swinging off the banister and it seemed to be bravado with his pals. He was very fortunate as it's a fall of over 20 foot.”
