Marlborough for Newbury work-out

Nicky Henderson will gallop a quartet of his stable stars, including top chaser Marlborough, at Newbury racecourse tomorrow morning.

The Lambourn trainer will use the work-out to put a fitness edge on the four with Marlborough likely to be joined by Katarino, Geos and Bacchanal.

Henderson revealed the plan at the course where another of the stable`s classier types, Got One Too, scored an impressive win in the closing novice hurdle under a well-judged ride from Mick Fitzgerald.

'Some of them have been needing their first run a bit and the idea of coming back here is to put them spot-on for their different objectives,' he explained.

'To be honest I thought this one would too but they gave him a soft lead and Mick has been able to take a long pit stop down the back straight and give him a breather.

'Mick said that only Dayjur would have gone over the first three as fast as he did!'

He also confirmed that he had ruled out Sunday`s Edward Hanmer Memorial Chase for Marlborough, who is now a definite runner at Newbury in the Hennessy Cognac Gold Cup provided that the ground doesn`t go against him.

'I wouldn`t work him here if he was going to Haydock as it would be too near,' the trainer went on.

'I`ve got my eye on a three-mile intermediate chase at Sandown for Bacchanal at the beginning of next month.

'I`ve left him in the Hennessy but I`m not sure if I want to be throwing him into a race like that after he`s had only three races after fences _ the hurly-burly of the big field might just be too much for him.

'Also at the moment I would prefer good ground at the Hennessy for Marlborough while Bacchanal prefers it to be pretty soft.

'Geos is going for the Peterborough Chase at Huntingdon hopefully and with Katarino we just need to find out if he is breathing okay.

'I`ve told Newbury that I will only bring four but taking them to the course has been a big help in the past and I`m grateful for the chance to do it again.'
