Trainer John McConnell has been speaking about the devastating blow his County Meath felt following the death of one of his stable stars, Fennor Cross.

The six-year-old gelding had won seven races under both codes and McConnell felt that the best was yet to come from the son of Elzaam.

Having won four races on the flat under Donagh O'Connor, Fennor Cross than proved equally adept over hurdles, winning twice at Cheltenham last autumn, before taking a Grade 3 handicap hurdle at the Aintree festival on his final start.

McConnell said: “Fennor Cross broke his leg about six weeks ago, just pulling up on the gallop. It was just a normal gallop and shattered his leg.

“It’s a massive loss. He was a proper horse and we had him ear marked for the Coral Cup next year. He was going to have a Flat campaign until then.

“Unfortunately these things happen.”
