Navy Waters (4/1) made the breakthrough at the third attempt today, improving on two recent runner-up efforts to win Down Royal’s BoyleSports Smart Race Card Maiden, for trainer Willie McCreery and jockey Nathan Crosse.

The race featured Aintree festival bumper-winner Seo Linn (8/15f), who debuted in a Flat race, and while she travelled well for much of the 1m 2f 109yds distance, failed to quicken in the closing stages.

Both Navy Waters and eventual runner-up First Ascent went by Seo Linn in the final furlong, with a nose separating the leading pair and a further half-length to Seo Linn in third.

Trainer McCreery, with his third winner in four days, reported “Navy Waters is hardy and tough. She had two lovely runs and I put the visor on because she didn't help Nathan the last time she ran in Ballinrobe: I thought she travelled lovely today.

"It was a real sprint from the corner (bend) and she put her head down on the right spot.

“Her dam won over two miles so I'll take the visor back off her next time and she could go up to 1m4f. She has a lovely way of going, she's a nice lazy filly and keeps saving for herself."
