Megan Telford-Kelly enjoyed an evening she will never forget when partnering her first winner on the racecourse as Mogwli landed Division l of the Save 33% Buying Tickets Online Handicap at Gowran Park.

Trained by Willie McCreery, the eight-year-old grey has been a real stable favourite over the years. Young apprentices such as Nathan Crosse, Jack Cleary, Wesley Joyce and Jessica Maye all enjoyed early career wins on the admirable grey.

Well away from stalls, Telford-Kelly, from Moone County Kildare, tracked the leaders on the 22/1 chance before coming through with her challenge over a furlong out.

Heading Sierra De Gredos inside the final furlong, Telford-Kelly and Mogwli held Jessica O'Gorman on Gianh River by half-a-length.

Mogwli is a half-brother to Fairy Wings who earlier finished runner-up in the Listed Vintage Tipple Stakes.

Willie McCreery said: “He was on a happy night tonight and I think the ground was well watered for him. He loved it down the inside getting a bit squashed the whole way.

“He’s a great auld servant and great for the girls to ride, a great learning horse. He’s down the inside, brave as a lion, and Megan gave him a good ride and was patient all the way up the straight.

“I’m delighted for her. She’s a great worker in the yard.

“She rode for the international team in three-day eventing. She has great hands and breaks a lot of the yearlings at home.”
