Michael Cullen passes away The death has occurred of Wexford trainer Michael Cullen, who passed away after a lengthy battle with Motor neurone disease. Saddling many winners throughout his career, he is probably best known for his handling of American Jennie. A Grade 3 winner over fences, she was fourth in the Irish National of 2006 and went a place better when a close third the following year. Rounding off her career in the best possible fashion, she landed the Pat Taaffe Handicap Chase at the Punchestown Festival and as a broodmare, she has since produced many foals, with American Mike the most notable of them. Cullen again saddled the winner of that valuable Grade B contest in 2013, with Katie Walsh guiding his Carrig Millie to victory for owner Maurice Sheehy. Completing a double at Tramore on May 30th in 2014, those ultimately proved to be his final winners. Below is his death notice as it appears on rip.ie.
