Mole digs deep for victory

Trusted Mole kept up the fine form up Jamie Osborne`s Lambourn yard when running out the cheekiest of winners of the Racing Welfare Claiming Stakes at Newmarket today.

The gelding had shown signs of quirkiness in several of his previous outings but under Richard Hughes he was always cantering over his rivals and, when a split came between Sashay and Texas Ranger inside the final furlong he readily took it and scored hard held.

Asked if he had ridden an easier winner this season Hughes commented: 'Unbelievably I have (he was referring to 40-1 on chance Summer View at Nottingham) but I must say that having phoned Jamie and taken his advice I was always sat like a mouse on him and was always going to win.

'He was just a bit keen in his blinkers at Newbury and while he`ll never win by ten lengths I took it steady as I knew I have a busy day ahead.'

The Osborne stable realised its finest moment when Irony won the Windsor Castle Stakes at Royal Ascot last weekand that colt is to run next in the Molecomb Stakes at Glorious Goodwood.
