Monday jumps cards off

Monday's jumps meetings in Britain at Towcester and Taunton have both already fallen to the unseasonal weather.

Towcester clerk of the course Robert Bellamy was due to inspect the track at 12pm but made a slightly earlier call after the venue saw plenty of overnight snow.

He said: "We are covered in about two inches of snow and have further showers forecast today, possibly totalling another two inches.

"We also have sub-zero temperatures - it is -2C at the moment and the wind chill is forecast to be -7C tomorrow, so there is no chance of it improving."

The meeting at Taunton was abandoned due to waterlogging.

A total of 34mm of rain arrived within the space of 48 hours at the Somerset venue on ground that was already heavy.

The weather has left clerk of the course Michael Trickey with little choice but to call off the meeting with no chance of conditions improving sufficiently in order for racing to take place.

The abandonments leave Lingfield's all-weather programme as the only scheduled racing action in Britain or Ireland on Monday.
